‘It really bothered me’ | Commanders star Terry McLaurin donates time & resources for kids being bullied

Tackling Inequity: NFL Star's Mission to Provide Laundry Supplies for D.C. Students

In a heartwarming display of community engagement, Terry McLaurin, the star wide receiver for the Washington Commanders, has partnered with UnitedHealthcare to launch a groundbreaking initiative aimed at supporting underprivileged students in the nation's capital. The program, dubbed "Terry's Locker," seeks to address a pressing issue that often goes unnoticed: the lack of access to basic necessities like laundry supplies for many students in the District of Columbia.

Empowering Students, Fostering Inclusion

Addressing the Invisible Barrier

The reality is that for some students in the District of Columbia, access to a washing machine or even basic detergent is a luxury they cannot afford. This lack of access can have far-reaching consequences, as McLaurin himself witnessed growing up. "For kids to be bullied or separated from their classmates because of things like that. Ostracized. it really bothered me," he recounts, highlighting the social stigma and isolation that can stem from unclean clothing.

Partnering for Change

Determined to make a difference, McLaurin has teamed up with UnitedHealthcare, a Fortune 500 company, to launch "Terry's Locker." This innovative program aims to ensure that students in need receive the resources most of us take for granted. "They have the opportunities to come and be their full selves and not have to worry about things that are sometimes out of their control," McLaurin explains, underscoring the program's mission to empower students and foster a more inclusive environment.

Fostering Collaboration and Awareness

The launch of "Terry's Locker" at McKinley Middle School in Northeast D.C. was a testament to the power of collaboration and community engagement. United Healthcare's Vice President, Anton DeRoo, emphasizes the contagious nature of generosity, sharing that his team is eager to participate in the next event. "They heard Terry say there's three more events. They want to be at the next one," DeRoo reveals, highlighting the growing momentum behind this initiative.

Expanding the Reach

The organizers of "Terry's Locker" have already scheduled the next public event for next Tuesday in Richmond, Virginia, demonstrating their commitment to expanding the program's reach and impact. By addressing the often-overlooked issue of access to laundry supplies, McLaurin and his partners are not only providing tangible support to students in need but also fostering a more equitable and inclusive educational environment.

Leveraging the Power of Influence

As a professional athlete, McLaurin recognizes the unique platform he holds and the responsibility that comes with it. "I think that we all understand we have this platform for more than being football players," he says. "We should be leaders in the community and provide resources, and wisdom, and financial support for the communities around us." By leveraging his influence and partnering with like-minded organizations, McLaurin is setting an inspiring example of how sports figures can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those they serve.

Addressing the Ripple Effects

The impact of "Terry's Locker" extends beyond the immediate benefits to students. As McKinley Middle School Assistant Principal Rasheda Webster explains, the program helps to address the broader consequences of unclean clothing, such as truancy and chronic absenteeism. "They don't have to stay at home, become truant or chronically absent due to not being able to wash their uniforms and their school clothing," she says, highlighting the far-reaching implications of this initiative. In a world where the spotlight often shines on the on-field exploits of professional athletes, Terry McLaurin's commitment to making a tangible difference in the lives of underprivileged students in D.C. serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative potential of sports figures who choose to leverage their platform for the greater good. Through "Terry's Locker," McLaurin and his partners are not only providing essential resources but also fostering a more inclusive and equitable educational environment, one that empowers students to thrive and reach their full potential.
