Takeaways from AP’s reporting on how Arizona voters view the economy with the election close at hand
Arizonans Grapple with Economic Realities Amid Booming Job Market and Soaring Housing CostsAs the Arizona economy flourishes by many measures, voters in the presidential battleground state are grappling with a disconnect between the rosy economic indicators and their personal financial experiences. With housing and other costs spiking, many Arizonans feel the promises of help from Democrats and Republicans ring hollow, leaving them uncertain about their economic futures.## Powering Through Challenges, but at What Cost? The desert cities of Maricopa County, including Phoenix, Mesa, and Chandler, have been fueled by a surge of Americans seeking the area's eternal sunshine and natural beauty. This influx, coupled with the expansion of major tech companies like TSMC and Google, has bolstered the local job market, with Maricopa posting the largest percentage job gains among the nation's biggest counties so far this year. However, this economic boom has come at a price. Home prices in Maricopa have nearly doubled since 2016, leaving many voters feeling that the promise of middle-class stability is increasingly out of reach. "Many voters see home prices and 30-year mortgage rates and compare that to the experience of their parents and grandparents and say 'I'm never going to own a home,'" said Glenn Farley, director of policy and research at the nonprofit Common Sense Institute Arizona.## Voters Seek Tangible Solutions, Not Empty PromisesArizonans across the political spectrum have expressed frustration that they aren't hearing enough from the presidential candidates, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, about how they plan to address the rising costs of housing, groceries, and other essentials. While Harris has proposed ,000 for first-time homebuyers and tax breaks for new parents, and the Trump campaign has suggested mass deportations of undocumented migrants to free up housing and higher tariffs to create job opportunities, voters remain skeptical that these measures will provide meaningful relief."When it comes to helping the citizen, helping a guy that's got to go to work every day to provide for their family, I'm not hearing too much about it," said Abel Ramirez, a 32-year-old Apache Junction resident who is struggling to buy a single-family home for his growing family. Ramirez, who voted for Trump in 2020, is now considering sitting out this election, disillusioned by the lack of focus on the issues that matter most to him and his community.## A Complicated Economic LandscapeThe economic reality in Arizona mirrors the complicated views held by many Americans. While some Arizonans, like John Akers, have seen their fortunes improve with the thriving high-end audio-visual business and the appreciation of their Phoenix home, they are also witnessing the struggles of their aging relatives and close friends who are considering leaving the state due to the rising cost of living."No matter what, we're going to have polarization at the end of this election," said Akers, who plans to vote for Trump. "The political conversation is too often pitting the middle class against each other, and there's been too little focus on the issues that matter, like inflation and housing costs."## The Elusive Promise of StabilityMaricopa County's economic boom has been a double-edged sword, destabilizing people's confidence in the real estate market and making the promise of middle-class stability increasingly out of reach. As more people moved into the area at rates that exceeded housing supply, prices have skyrocketed, leaving homeowners feeling trapped and renters feeling that the dream of homeownership is slipping away.Trevor Cowling and his wife, for example, bought their 1,500-square-foot home for 5,000 with a 3.1% interest rate on a 30-year mortgage. Now, with interest rates hovering above 6%, Cowling, 28, says that if he tried to buy his home today, the monthly mortgage "would cost more than even what I am making."As Arizonans grapple with these economic realities, they are left wondering if the political discourse is too focused on divisive cultural issues, rather than the practical concerns that matter most to their daily lives and financial well-being.
